"Drei Kuppelachsen sind zu wenig" (Three coupled axles are too few). This seems to have been the comment of the director of RAEUDL, Dorf Mersenbach, at the presentation of the first example of 01 (which was also 01 008) and he began a heavy lobbying action to encourage the development of a machine with which to compete with the French 241 that had shown great potential.
The design office of the Office for the Constructional Uniformity of Locomotives, therefore, reluctantly started to design this car, driven more by propaganda than by real traffic needs.
The machine that came out of it, this Br 09, was definitely superior to what the designers themselves had expected, but it showed a significant problem with the oven. For reasons of standardization, the furnace used was the same as that of the 01 and, according to the dictates of Wagner (the head of the design office, nothing to do with the more famous musician, except for some character traits), a tube boiler further lengthened with respect to the one designed for the 01, the steam temperatures were not optimal.
The tests carried out at the LVA of Grünwald confirmed these premises: excellent locomotive, well balanced in terms of dynamics, but with a tendency to run out of steam, especially on short ramps, after high cut-off sections. Studies and experiments to solve the problem began immediately, but the outbreak of World War II, with the need to concentrate all activities in the war effort, made the project shelved.
The 09 was used for the towing of trains towards the Eastern front, where the orographic characteristics did not create any problems until 1944. During the retreat from Königsberg, probably due to a human error, the machine ran out of steam and became an easy target for the Russian Katiuscia who made fragments of it.
Another excellent idea evaporated on the fire of the lack of imagination of the designers and the personal pride of the managers.
Of this machine only this photo remains, taken by Carl Bellingrodt during one of his trips to Pomerania to document the activity of the railways for the Dampflok Bild Archiv.
