AT&SF 3003 was named "Centipede" and probably never was the name more appropriate.... This centipede was the result of a mistake. The guy in charge of assembling the 3000 series project made a mistake with the heliographs and the result was this 11-axis coupled monster under a cramped boiler. The AT&SF (Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe) engineers had already set up the locomotive, when one of the designers said "Who the f*ck designed this thing". At the answer: "You" the mistake was discovered and the construction shelved, unfortunately momentarily. As a matter of fact, the boy was the boyfriend of the daughter of the main shareholder, so... you know that the bosses are never wrong and the poor mechanics of the ATSF workshop had only to put together the monster. Oh, it was a sight to behold, that car with all those fancy wheels. Even Whyte, who had not foreseen a classification for such a nightmare, was in crisis... In Germany they immediately died of envy, and the RAEUDL tried in every way to hire the boy, who in the meantime was in Santo Domingo to have a good time with the friend of ... (but all this is of little interest for our discussion. Better not to increase the level of gossip already too high). The problem was that the boiler, although capable of moving a 2-10-10-2, could not even turn the wheels due to the enormous weight of the articulated coupling rod. Moreover, despite the use of all possible and imaginable devices, it was impossible to bend this beast. Needless to say, this machine was demolished and transformed into 4 shunter maneuvers with two axles and a Prarie well before its sister series 3000 (although definitely short-lived). |
